Language is fascinating.
It can tell us so much. Not just the words that are chosen, but how they’re said, why they’re said and who’s saying them.
There’s more than that though.
Languages themselves tell us all about the culture that created them.
What things people needed words for. What things they didn’t. What they needed to be able to describe. And what wasn’t considered worthwhile.
For example, there is no Italian word for ‘meeting’. They just use ours. Just something they didn’t consider important enough until recently.
There also isn’t really a word for ‘weekend’. Again, they just use the English one.
I wonder why that is.
Perhaps they just never saw the need to draw a distinction.
Until a different culture came along and told them they needed to.
What does your language say about you?
