against the grain

If you go with the flow, things are easy.

Stick with what’s normal, what’s expected and nobody will query it. They’ll probably even reinforce the belief that what you’re doing is right.

Convention is a powerful thing.

But how about when what you want is outside the norm?

People are going to start asking questions. They’re going to want more information. They’re going to want to know why.

They’re going to tell you you’re wrong.

We can expect this though, and carry on regardless. No matter what we do or don’t do, what we do or don’t want, someone is still going to tell us we’re wrong.

It doesn’t matter though. So long as we know why we’re doing what we’re doing, we’re free to carry on.
