Climbing has a wonderful way of bringing this relationship into sharp relief.

The route looks the same to everyone. Everyone has the same available handholds and the same available footholds.

The same piece of rock.

But that’s where the uniformity ends.

Which ones will you use? Which ones will you ignore? Which ones can you reach? Which ones are too far away?

These choices depend on numerous factors. Height, span, flexibility, mobility, strength, power, technique, head game… All of these affect your beta.

The metaphor can be extended to life in general.

How we interact with the world depends on so many circumstances. Some of these we can control. Some of them we can’t.
